A total of 40 victims of human trafficking were recorded in Slovakia in 2012, with the highest number of cases posted in Košice Region, the TASR newswire reported, citing Nadežda Šindlerová of the Interior Ministry’s Košice-based Information Centre for Combating Human Trafficking and Crime Prevention on Wednesday, February 6.

Victims of human trafficking were forced to work, beg and marry, and were subject to sexual exploitation, the centre reported, noting that abuse is increasingly directed towards male victims. Care for the victims of human trafficking is provided according to the individual needs of the affected person by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and three NGOs associated with the Interior Ministry: the Slovak Catholic Charity, Dotyk and Náruč.
