If presidential elections had taken place in Slovakia at the beginning of March, current Prime Minister Robert Fico – had he run – would have beaten businessman and philanthropist Andrej Kiska, according to the results of a Focus agency poll published on Wednesday, March 20.
The TASR newswire quoted Martin Slosiarik from Focus as saying that almost 59 percent of respondents would have voted for one of the candidates in the poll, of whom 30 percent would have supported Fico, with 23 percent backing Kiska. When it came to other possible candidates, Pavol Hrušovský (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)) scored 12 percent and Peter Šťastný (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) scored 10 percent. They were followed by Radoslav Procházka (9.4 percent), Ján Čarnogurský (7.6 percent) and Martin Bútora (7.5 percent).
Almost 23 percent of respondents declined to answer when asked who they would support in the presidential election, which are actually due to take place in spring 2014. More than 18 percent of the 1,002 respondents stated that they would not participate in the election.
