Single state-run health insurer project is delayed

THE HEALTH Ministry still has not presented the law to transform the country’s health insurance system into a system with a single health insurer. There is no new deadline scheduled for the law, which was originally slated to take effect as of May 2013. At its November 6 session the cabinet acknowledged the ministry’s report, which however does not include any deadlines, the TASR newswire reported.

Health Minister Zuzana Zvolenská said that the law is ready, but the date of its official presentation has not been scheduled because the government first wants to solve the issue of financing, TASR reported.

The government’s original plan to introduce a unitary system of public health insurance, which has earned much criticism, was scheduled to be implemented regardless of whether or not the state can come to an agreement with the shareholders of the private insurers.

In the event that no agreement is reached, the government’s expropriation of the health insurers and the launch of the unitary system were planned to be introduced as of July 2014. At the moment, however, the project has been delayed by several months, TASR wrote.
