Wizz Air opens base in Košice

LOW-COST airline Wizz Air is opening a base at the Košice airport, connecting the eastern Slovak city with Milan-Bergamo airport and Doncaster Sheffield in the UK.

“This is an extraordinary milestone not only for Košice airport, but also for the city of Košice and eastern Slovakia as a whole,” said Juraj Tóth of the airport’s marketing department for flight and non-flight operations, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “Wizz Air’s base is the first base of a foreign airline in eastern Slovakia.”

The Hungarian air carrier, as the largest no-frills airline in central and eastern Europe, placing an Airbus A320 at Kosice airport, will operate 14 flights weekly and give jobs to 30 people.

“This is a clear indication that it shares trust in the potential of our region and aims to develop this potential,” Tóth added, as quoted by TASR.

Wizz Air has been operating a regular Košice-London service since September 2013.
