THE POPULAR beach on the right bank of the Danube River is just a pleasant memory for Bratislava locals, who used to spend their summers there. That memory could soon materialise, as a team of developers is drawing up plans to revive the historically identified area Lido.

The project Nové Lido (New Lido) is expected to significantly change the area roughly bounded by the new Old Bridge, bridge Apollo and Einsteinova Street. It is authored by architects of Compass, Jakub Cigler Architekti and Marko & Placemakers studios, and developed by J&T and HB Reavis.

While the authors and developers of the projects stress the essential part of the project for the public is one that will help revive water-sport and recreational purposes of the river bank, Bratislava’s watermen and activists have launched a petition for another, significantly smaller project on the riverside.

The new Lido

The PR team of Nové Lido project claims it combines a number of attractive features of the riverside in Petržalka, a natural park and water area.

Ingrid Konrad, the chief architect of Bratislava, says that Nové Lido is an outline of a new philosophy which would be right if it maintained traditional aspects and developed new public functions of the riverside.

“Such projects must evolve in cooperation with the city and city boroughs to protect public interests and sustainable development in the wake of its historic value and current needs,” Konrad told The Slovak Spectator.
