More Slovak soldiers will attend the UNFICYP mission in Cyprus. Currently, there are 159 soldiers, but their number will increase by 10 as of September.

“Two military police officers and eight soldiers, who will fulfil their tasks in the buffer zone, will leave with the new rotation,” Defence Minister Peter Gajdoš said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that also Argentina and the United Kingdom will increase the number of soldiers there.

Slovakia will increase the number of the soldiers based on the request of the UN. Gajdoš informed about it already in June during his visit to Cyprus, TASR wrote.

Slovaks currently fulfil their tasks at the headquarters in Nicosia, where 61 soldiers are stationed, and Famagusta, where 98 soldiers are stationed.

The aim of the UNFICYP mission is to prevent the renewal of fighting between Cypriot Greeks and Turks, to secure the observation of a truce, and to contribute to the restoration and observation of rules and order on the island.
