While a look at the calendar indicates that there is still some time to go until we can enjoy the Christmas festivities, Bratislava has already installed its traditional Christmas tree in the Main Square.

This year the tree was put in place about 10 days earlier than last year. Mayor Ivo Nesrovnal explained that there was a need to have the tree installed in the square before the Christmas stalls are assembled.

The 30-year old Norway spruce is a present from a citizen from the Karlova Ves borough. It is 17 metres high and weighs two tons.

It is not decorated yet and will remain so until the launch of the traditional Christmas market. This will open on November 18 and the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree will take place then.

Rudolf Ivičič from the forest company Mestské lesy v Bratislave explained that this year’s Christmas tree is higher and wider than that of the previous year. Last year it was a Serbian spruce, which is, compared to a Norway spruce, half as wide. It was also by four metres shorter than the current one. After installation, this year’s Christmas tree is about 16 metres tall.

The Christmas tree will stay in the square until December 30. Afterwards it will be removed to make place for the New Year’s Eve festivities. But it will not be wasted - the needles will end up in the zoo as a fodder for the animals and the trunk will be turned into firewood.
