Western Slovakia


SPORT: The legendary Pravda-Televízia-Slovnaft athletic competition brings in its 52nd year a host of world-renowned athletic stars (Russian Sergei Bubka, Slovaks Imrich Bugár and Matej Tóth) to the x-bionic sphere stadium. In total, almost 130 athletes from 33 countries of all continents will compete – and an independent competitor, Russian standing long jumper Daria Klishina will participate. Totally, there will be nine male disciplines and five female disciplines. The event will be also be broadcast live on RTVS 2. Trnava/Červený Kameň

HISTORICAL FESTIVAL: Trenčianske Hradovánky (Trenčín Castle Games) – The festival at one of the oldest preserved castles in Slovakia, Trenčín, offers medieval duels, crafts, workshops, entertainment, a period camp, gastronomy, and more. JAZZ: The Ovsepian/Camarda/Valihora Trio represents three jazzmen, schoolmates from the Berklee College of Music in Boston (Vardan Ovsepian, pianist & composer, born in Armenia and currently living in the USA; Daniele Camarda, double bass player from Sicily, Italy; and Bratislava native Martin Valihora on drums) who have embarked on a Slovak-wide tour. OPERETTA: The Riviera Girl / The Gipsy Princess –Arguably, the most popular work of Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán comes to Piešťany as a guest performance by the State Opera Banská Bystrica, as rehearsed and conducted by Ján Procházka, directed by Imre Halasi, with costumes by Henriette Laczo, stage design by Robert Menczel, choreography by Gyorgy Gessler and choirmaster Iveta Popovičová. DANCE: Nekončiaci tanec / Neverending Dance – The Banská Bystrica City Days include a host of events, and one of them is the premiere of this performance of the local Štúdio Tanca theatre (Divadlo Štúdio Tanca) which will take place in the central SNP Square and will be free for everyone. JAZZ FEST: One Day Jazz Fest – The popular jazz fest defies its name, as it has grown into a several-day event touring, apart form Bratislava, other cities around Slovakia. The New Faces of Jazz programme, offering the Ovsepian/Camarda/Valihora Trio. This grouping represents three schoolmates from the Berklee College of Music in Boston (Vardan Ovsepian, pianist & composer, born in Armenia and currently living in the USA; Daniele Camarda, double bass player from Sicily, Italy; and Bratislava native Martin Valihora on drums) who have embarked on a wider tour. FESTIVAL: FUBABY – Festival of Art Banská Bystrica (Festival umenia Banská Bystrica- FUBABY) is the popular event promoting art and design in the streets of the city, thus promoting them amongst the wider public. Most of the events between June 19 and 24 will be free, except for the two concerts of June 21 (Operatic Courtyard – artists from the local State Opera performing popular arias – 18:00, courtyard of the old Town-hall - concert of pop singer Beáta Dubasová – 20:00,) and on June 22 (folk ensembles 17:00, Sematam band 18:00, Dávid Bílek 19:00; IMT Smile 19:30, Amphitheatre). SPORT: International Yoga Day – The June 21, International Yoga Day, will be celebrated later in Banská Bystrica – on the morning of June 25 by a series of free yoga classes between 9:30 and 12:00. FILM FESTIVAL: Art Film Fest 2017 – The 25th year of international film festival which was moved from Trenčianske Teplice to Košice combines the actual trends of world cinematography with film classics – and also Slovak films which proved successful at international festivals (Špina / Filth, OUT). Slovak actress-turned-diplomat Magda Vášáryová will receive an award, as will Czech actor Ondřej Vetchý and the head of Karlove Vary IFF (and actor) Jiří Bartoška. Apart from two international competitions, there will also be a selection of Slovak movies, a section of children’s movies, and a number of accompanying events (many in the Tabačka KulturFabrik). In total, 175 films from 47 countries will be screened. During the festival, a special carriage on the train between Bratislava and Košice will be screening festival films as well. OPEN-AIR EVENT: Airshow Košice – The Air days in Košice mean a weekend of air shows, programmes for children and a cultural programme. The schedule of flights starts at 13:00 (until 17:00) and includes parachute jumps, air acrobatics, and re-enactments of aerial fights (Retro Sky Team) while the cultural programme starts at 10:00. MUSIC FESTIVAL: Dobrý festival 2017 – The “Good festival” (i.e. dobrý festival) at the lido in Delňa offers three days of music, theatre, film screenings, martial art demonstrations, events for children and more. OPERA/DERNIERE: Pietro Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana / Ruggiero Leoncavallo: I Pagliacci – The two shorter operas (a one-act and a two-act piece), are often combined to offer a full Italian operatic evening. In Košice, the last performance of these two operas is conducted and adapted by Peter Valentovič, directed by Michael Tarant, with stage and costume design by Dana Hávová and choreography by Jiří Pokorný. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Lotz Trio – The concert by the chamber ensemble named after the famous instrument-maker who lived and worked in Bratislava and Vienna – played on replicas of original period instruments – is part of the 6th year of the Hevhetia music festival, offering period music mostly by Mozart, and that of Slovak composer Juraj Družecký.
