Up to 1,000 people can find a job at Bratislava-based carmaker Volkswagen Slovakia (VW SK) by the end of this year. The company wants to focus on staffers from Slovakia, but admits the situation in the labour market is complicated.

“It’s becoming hard to find new employees, regardless of their qualifications,” said Ralf Sacht, chair of the VW SK’s board of directors, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

If they do not find enough people in the Slovak labour market, they are ready to take staffers from abroad, he added.

The carmaker has already employed 400 new employees in the first half of the year, increasing the number of its staffers to 12,700.

“We’re happy that we’ve managed to do this with the difficult situation in the Slovak labour market,” Sacht said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

The creation of 1,000 new positions is related to the introduction of new products, he added. The carmaker is looking for a total of 800 people for its body shop, painting shop and assembly hall, while the remaining 200 would take up highly skilled jobs.

Every employee will undergo the introductory training at the company. The carmaker is also ready to educate qualified experts who can operate the automatisation technology and robots within its dual system. In its Dual Academy, there will be students in five specialisations as of September, SITA reported.

A new feature is a pilot project for a dual bachelor's degree course organised by the Slovak Technical University’s Faculty of Engineering, which will also begin in September.

VW SK also noted that it offers the highest average salaries in Slovak industry, apart from providing a generous social programme. The gross monthly commencing salary lies between €1,050-1,250, depending on qualifications, apart from a one-off bonus for newcomers, holidays and Christmas bonuses and other bonuses related to the plant’s economic results.
