The parents of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, who were murdered in their house in Veľká Mača, are skeptical about their prospects of seeing the murder investigated. The resignation of Robert Fico from the prime ministerial post and the major reshuffles expected in the cabinet have not changed their minds on the matter.

"I would like to believe but after the latest charade with the so-called change of government, I do not believe anything anymore," Jozef Kuciak, the father of the murdered journalist, said in a political talk show on the private Markíza TV channel on March 18. He admits that he expected "at least a couple of honest people will be found there".

"But as far as I can see, politics is nothing else but striving for profit," Kuciak said. "They have promised to be here to serve the nation and the people of this country but I believe they only serve themselves and perhaps their relatives."

Zlatica Kušnírová, the mother of Martina Kušnírová is also doubtful that the investigation will bring justice.

"But I hope that at least some information about the circumstances of the case will be unveiled," she said on television.

"I call on everyone to stand by us and help us in whatever way they can, to reveal the murderers and those who gave them their orders," Kušnírová said.

Daniel Lipšic, former justice and interior minister who now acts as attorney for Kuciak's and Kušnírová's parents, stated in the debate that he knows the investigators and prosecutors working on the double murder investigation have a sincere interest in finding the culprits and pressing charges against them.

"But in the soclal context we are in now, it will be complicated and that is why the demands for changes in the police presidium are not just cosmetic, they are evident," Lipšic said.

The police have been investigating the murder since the night of February 25, when the bodies of Kuciak and Kušnírová were found. The police and the prosecution believe that the murder was connected with Kuciak's work as an investigative reporter. Since then, information about the investigation has been scarce, as the police are following the directive of the General Prosecutor, Jaromír Čižnár, not to publish any details without first checking with him. According to the publicly available information, the police believe the murder took place probably on Wednesday night, four days before the bodies were found.

Before he was murdered, Kuciak was investigating the links between the Italian mafia and people in the government of Robert Fico. His last, unfinished, article was published by a number of media outlets in Slovakia and around the world.
