For some, Easter is a reminder of the traditional habits of our ancestors, for another an opportunity to go out into nature, and for the faithful it is the most important church holiday of the year. Each group will find something within the events that have been prepared for them by the city, its boroughs and other organisations. People should remember that shops will be closed on Good Friday, March 30, Easter Sunday, April 1, and Easter Monday, April 2. So going to shopping centres on these days would be not the best idea.

Easter in the boroughs

The borough of Dúbravka is hosting an Easter craft fair offering handmade products, natural products and healthy food not usually sold on the market as well as various workshops. It is organising it for the fourth time in cooperation with the Life Project. The craft fair will take place in front and inside the local house of culture on Saratovská Street.

The program starts on Friday, March 23, at 15:00, and lasts until 19:00. On Saturday, the fair will last from 10:00 to 19:00. At 16:00 there will be an Easter egg hunt on the meadow next to the house of culture.

The borough of Karlova Ves is not preparing any Easter event on except a cleaning since in the past people were not interested in Easter events, Karlova Ves spokesperson Branislav Heldes stated. The traditional spring cleaning will be held this Saturday, March 24 from 8:00 to 12:00.

“Everybody who is in the mood and has time is welcome to help turn Karlova Ves into a cleaner place,” said Heldes. “The local office will provide waste bags, gloves, tools and will take the waste away.”

On the other hand, the Vajnory borough, which still maintains its look of a village, has prepared programmes recalling rich local folklore traditions. The Podobenka children’s folklore ensemble will demonstrate spring traditions in the local house of culture starting at 15:00.

Moreover, each March Thursday the Vajnory folklore house (Vajnorský Ľudový Dom) on 181 Roľnícka hosts workshops on the creation of traditional Vajnory Easter eggs. They start at 17:00 and last until 19:00.

For Easter Monday, the local council and Podobenka prepared a traditional whipping with girls dressed in Vajnory native costumes. The event will last from 9:00 until 13:00. For the early whippers there will also be small snacks.

The borough of Ružinov will recall an old Bratislava tradition – the burning of Kyselica, known as Morena in a large part of Slovakia. One day before Palm Sunday, a straw puppet representing the goddess of winter and death, Kyselica, was taken out and burned on a river bank. This year this event will start at the Vlčie hrdlo bus terminal on March 24 at 16:00. From here the participants will walk with Kyselica to the site where the Small Danube branches away from the Danube River.

The Rafael Centre on Narcisova Street in the borough of Ružinov has organised a spring wake-up program for children for the same day of March 24. It will start at 16.00 and the children will paint Easter eggs, make Easter switches, an item each boy needs for Easter Monday, or burn Morena, a puppet symbolising the departing winter.

For Easter Monday, April 2, Ružinov prepared an Easter egg hunt for children in Ostredky Park. Afterwards, kids can swap the found eggs for a little reward in the Planetka restaurant. There will also be a recitation contest of Easter rhymes and a competition for the biggest switch.

In addition, children will be able to create Easter decorations or decorate Easter eggs in creative workshops in the Old Town. The event will take place on Saturday, March 24 at the Centre for Free Time (CVČ) at 35 Štefánikova Street. The first workshop will start at 9:00 and will last until 10:30 and the second will take place from 11:00 to 12:30. Those interested need to sign up for the event at cvcba1@gmail.com or personally at the centre.
