The double murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, will be investigated by a joint investigation team.

This stems from an agreement signed by General Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár and his partners in The Hague on April 18, the TASR newswire reported.

It was preceded by intensive talks and several coordination meetings between the representatives of Slovak and Italian judicial authorities and the representatives of Eurojust and Europol, said spokesperson for the General Prosecutor’s Office, Andrea Predajňová.

“I consider the signing of the agreement extremely important because it will serve as a base for exchanging and gathering information leading to clarifying the case and revealing the perpetrator or perpetrators,” Čižnár said, as quoted by TASR.

Proposal of agreement sent in March

Eurojust was actively participating in forming the team, according to its head and the national member of Slovakia in Eurojust, Ladislav Hamran.

“Eurojust is ready to intensively help the prosecutors of both countries when investigating this serious and condemnable crime,” Hamran said, as quoted by TASR.

Čižnár said in the second half of March that after intensive communication with Italian judicial bodies, he sent a proposal of the agreement to create the joint investigation team to investigate the double murder of Kuciak and Kušnírová. The proposal was sent on March 16 via Eurojust, TASR wrote.
