The Slovak national hockey team won one point in their first match at the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark against the Czech Republic. The match ended with the result 2:3 in overtime.

Slovak goals were scored by Michal Krištof and Andrej Sekera, while Dominik Kubalík and Martin Nečas, the latter two times, scored for the Czech Republic.

Before the May 5 march, the countries played 62 games against each other. Slovakia lost 41 matches, won 14 and ended 7 in a tie, the SITA newswire reported.

Slovakia now has 1 point in the preliminary round.

The Slovaks are playing in group A of the preliminary round held in Copenhagen, Denmark. They will face teams from Austria, Belarus, the Czech Republic, France, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Based on current IIHF World Rankings, Slovakia is currently ranked 10th, while the Czech Republic is 5th.
