Trains between Bratislava and Košice will arrive sooner

The new timetable brings about several changes. What should passengers expect?

The timetable of trains will change significantly after December 9.

For example, the Intercity (IC) and express trains between Bratislava and Košice running through Žilina will be quicker by two to seven minutes. The journey by the quickest train, the IC 45, will take 4 hours and 36 minutes, while the other IC trains will arrive to their final destination after 4 hours and 50 minutes, the Sme daily reported.

Quicker express trains on other routes

As for the trains between Košice and Vienna, the train will leave the former shortly after 7:00 and will arrive to the latter just before 13:30. As for the opposite direction, the train will leave Vienna at 14:37 and arrive in Košice at 20:42. They will stop in Bratislava’s Nové Mesto and Petržalka stations.

Express trains running on the same route will be quicker, Sme wrote. The journey between Bratislava and Košice is expected to last 5 hours and 40 minutes, which is 10 minutes less than now.

“Altogether 19 trains running between Bratislava and Košice will be quicker, while on the Bratislava-Žilina route it will be 21 trains,” said Filip Hlubocký, head of the state-run passenger carrier ZSSK, as quoted by Sme.

New routes to be added

20 new trains are expected to be added on the route between Zvolen (Banská Bystrica Region) and Šahy (Nitra Region). They are expected to be used mostly by pupils and people travelling to work, Sme wrote.

In addition, 30 out of 33 trains running between Žilina and Trenčín will be two-storey. New motor trains are expected to be added in mid-2019.

Moreover, there will be a completely new direct connection between Bratislava and Zürich. The new pair of high-speed Railjet xpress trains will run on the Bratislava, Main station – Wien Hauptbahnof – Salzburg – Innsbruck – Zürich route.

Another pair of trains will be added to the route between Košice and Prague, Sme wrote.
