Skiers can fly to the Tatras and Liptov this winter season. Poprad airport connects Slovakia with the Ukraine, Great Britain and Latvia, the TASR newswire informed.

The Hungarian carrier, WizzAir, flies three times a week between London and Poprad during the winter. The Latvian national flight carrier, airBaltic, connects the Tatras with the Baltic countries once a week with a flight from Riga which will continue until March 9, 2019. SkyUp Airlines will fly once a week from the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. This route comes into operation on December 29 and will continue until March 10, 2019.

“The Tatras and Liptov are the most attractive mountain regions in Slovakia,” said Katarína Šarafínová, manager of the Regional organisation of tourism (OOCR) Region Liptov, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

Cheaper than the Alps

Hundreds of thousands of people come here every year to enjoy skiing. Slovaks make up about 60 percent of the guests, however more and more people are flying to Slovakia to ski, Šarafínová said, adding that there were about 10,000 skiers last winter season. Those who travel by plane usually stay for one week.

Head of the OOCR Region High Tatras, Veronika Littvová, noted that the Tatras are different to the Alps.

“They are smaller and there are less ski routes, but there is a higher concentration of various attractions in a small place,” she said, as quoted by TASR, adding that they have no ambition to compete for skiers who want to ski hundreds of routes or kilometres all week long.

The Tatras are of interest mainly to families with children who are looking for a variety of services, Littvová said, adding that prices of the services are lower than in the Alps and the distances between the airports, hotels and ski resorts are shorter.
