TOP 10

Jethro Tull

HANT Aréna, Trnavská cesta, Nové Mesto, Friday, January 18, 19:00

Even if their long career stalled at the start of the ‘70s, Jethro Tull would still go down in rock history for one crucial thing: they proved that the flute could be a killer rock ‘n’ roll instrument. Frontman Ian Anderson has wielded the instrument – a favorite among middle-school-band girls and wandering minstrels for almost a thousand years – like a madman onstage, aggressively blowing solos usually reserved for guitars or saxophones. But paired with the band’s era-spanning brand of prog-folk music – expertly displayed on 1971’s breakthrough ‘Aqualung’ album – the flute has become a weapon of mass destruction in Anderson’s hands. Despite the many lineup changes the band has gone through over the years, Jethro Tull’s records have rarely diverted from their ambitious paths. The group infamously won the first-ever Hard Rock/Metal Grammy in 1989, which isn’t as farfetched as detractors claim. Admission: €45 - €55. More info: http://bit.ly/JethroTullBA.

CinemAfrica: Wùlu

Karpatská 2, Bratislava, Wednesday, January 23, 20:00

After an attempt to get his sister out of prostitution by working as a driver fails, 20-year-old Ladji, enters the drug trafficking business, in Wulu, to make enough money to achieve his goal. He encounters a new world, that he had never imagined, of women and money. However, he also finds himself in a dangerous world when he is embroiled in the Malian drug ring.

Wulu is the feature film directing debut by French-Malian filmmaker Daouda Coulibaly. The film has been described by critics as “a cinematic stunner with strong political commentary about Mali”. The Hollywood Reporter reports that “the film’s foretold but very understated ending, which keeps a key moment offscreen to devastating effect, again confirms that Coulibaly is a talent to watch”. The film received nominations at the Hamburg Film Festival, London Film Festival and Miami Film Festival.

Admission: voluntary fee. More info: http://bit.ly/WuluAfr

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION IN SLOVAK NATIONAL GALLERY:
Useful Photography. Photography in Contemporary Slovak Art – This exhibition will not present photography as a useful, fast recording medium, "a document of the period", or as an instrument of digital manipulation, but as a tool that is suitable for a wide range of use in contemporary art. In their response to the era of digital technology, artists use the photo medium much more freely but in a more sophisticated way. Appropriated documented reality is constructed, arranged, staged anew, but with the use of purely photographic methods and classical approaches. The collection will focus on events in the past 10 to 15 years, examples of artistic techniques and strategies within the wide spectrum of possibilities of this medium. It will also take into consideration a relatively new phenomenon - the impact of foreign training and long-term stays on the work of Slovak artists. Open: Tue – Wed 10:00 – 18:00, Thur 12:00 – 20:00, Fri – Sun 10:00 – 18:00 until Feb 17, 2019. More info: www.sng.sk.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS IN DANUBIANA:
Marek Ormandík - Marek gets in his car or on his bicycle and transports himself to his studio. From Bratislava’s wider downtown to the outskirts of a nearby town where his atelier sits, on the edge of the forest, at the end of a road. This journey is a moment of initiation, a psychological method, a purgation by which Marek rids himself of existential concerns, clears his mind and begins a transformation from a mere mortal into an Artist (Marek Maker). The further he is from home, the more his superpowers seethe inside him. By entering his studio, the transformation is complete. His studio is a black box – in the cybernetic sense of the term. Open: 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. Closed on Mondays. Bratislava-Čunovo, Vodné dielo. More info: www.danubiana.sk.
Vladimír Komárek: Touches of Silence - Czech painter, graphic artist, illustrator and teacher, and a prominent figure of Czech visual art of the 20th century. The compelling nature of his paintings, prints and illustrations won not only interest by also the hearts of many people. The same applies to his storytelling, humour and humanity. Open: 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. Closed on Mondays. Bratislava-Čunovo, Vodné dielo. More info: www.danubiana.sk.
Martina Matlovičová, Vladimír Král: Illustrations - Martina Matlovičová was born on Christmas Eve in 1975 in Bratislava and studied at the Academy of Performing Arts. She has won the following awards: The Most Beautiful Books of Slovakia (2001), the Golden Apple at the BIB 2009 (Bratislava, Tracyho tiger a Drevený tato / Tracy’s Tiger and the Wooden Dad), the Golden Ribbon 2010 (Prague, A pak se to stalo / And Then It happened; Chrochtík a Kvikalka na cestě za blýskavým prasátkem / Chrochtík and Kvikalka on the Road to a Shiny Piglet). Her illustrations are exhibited at home and abroad. Vladimír Král was born in 1974 in Bratislava. From 1994 to 1999 he studied at the Animation Department of the Film and TV Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. Since then he has worked as an illustrator, stage designer, director of animated TV spots and most recently as a painter. He was involved in creating puppet theater stage designs and spatial solutions at BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children in Bratislava in the following puppet theater productions: Betlehémske rozprávky (Fairy Tales of Bethlehem, 1998) and Veľký primáš Baro (The Great First Violin, Baro, 2002). Open: 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. Closed on Mondays. Bratislava-Čunovo, Vodné dielo. More info: www.danubiana.sk.
