Following Speaker of Parliament Andrej Danko’s participation in the political talk show V Politike (In Politics), broadcast by private news channel TA3 on January 27, the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) wants to turn to the prosecutor’s office due to his statements.

“I was granted my degree legally, I’m using it legally and no little gypsy from the SaS will take liberties with me,” Danko said, referring to SaS MP Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová.

Danko was responding to the accusations that his doctoral dissertation was plagiarised and the attempts of the opposition to remove him from his post. Ďuriš Nicholsonová was among the critics of his behaviour towards this scandal and even submitted a criminal complaint concerning the dissertation to the General Prosecutor’s Office in October 2018.

The SaS now claims that Danko has committed the crime of defaming nation, race and belief.

“Andrej Danko has offended Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová not only as a politician, but also as a woman and a mother, and discredited himself as a person and politician,” reads the party’s statement, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

It was signed by SaS chair Richard Sulík and deputy chairs Ľubomír Galko and Jana Kiššová.

The opposition meanwhile delivered the required 33 signatures to summon a special session, at which they want to discuss the doctoral dissertation and attempt to dismiss Danko from his post as speaker of parliament.
