Italian journalist: Kuciak's work burned dirty money worth millions

The murdered journalist was better at investigating than the Slovak police, says Italian journalist Maria Grazia Mazzola.

On February 1, the Italian RAI Uno public-service television published pictures that were reportedly taken by people who spied on Ján Kuciak in the months before he and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová were murdered.

The pictures are now part of the investigation file. The Denník N daily reported that they were handed to the police by Peter Tóth, who followed Kuciak at the request of Marian Kočner. Italian journalist Maria Grazia Mazzola, who published the pictures, says in an interview for Sme that the pictures prove Kuciak had been followed for months, in every moment of his daily life.

Sme: Why have you decided to look into the murder of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová?

Maria Grazia Mazzola: I am a special correspondent for the TG1 news service and I have covered the mafia for 30 years. The journalism that I believe in is the testimony of people living their civic lives. That is why I do my investigative work in the name of citizens and victims.

Having said that, it is my duty to deal with the murder of Jan and Martina, as well as the murder of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. I work on a special edition of TG1 about the mafia in Europe and about the murders of these colleagues.

Sme: On February 1 the Italian public-service RAI Uno aired your story about the Kuciak murder. What is the main finding of this story in your view?

Should journalists who were followed be afraid? Was the Italian mafia involved in the murder? Who are the white collars Mazzola talks about?
