Original photos of Slovak photographer Dežo Hoffman and other subjects recalling the photographer will be the part of the exhibition in his birthplace in Banská Štiavnica.

The around 250-year-old house located in the centre of Banská Štiavnica is undergoing reconstruction since the brothers Šimon Martin and Michal Šafařík decided to save it. It should be open to the public in several months.

“The house is of craftsman origin. It was divided into two parts, there was a workshop in the first part and a family lived in the second,” said Šafařík, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

Who is Hoffman?

At the beginning of the 20th century Hoffman’s family used to live in the house. The famous Slovak photographer was born in 1912. The locals remember that there used to be a pub in the house. Allegedly, Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand Coburg liked to stop here, living in nearby Svätý Anton. Later, there was an accommodation for students in the front part of the house. There was no accommodation in the last four decade and the house had fallen into disrepair.

The brothers decided to renovate the house. The project was supported by the Culture Ministry. They are now collecting the money to support the project and buy the original photos they want to present to the world. The exhibition should be focused on the life and art of Dežo Hoffman.

“We would like to put together an overview of his career because many people know him as a photographer of the Beatles,” Šafařík said, as quoted by TASR. He added that the Beatles were the peak of his career. However, they want to present more of his photos to let people know the famous people with whom he worked. Besides the exhibition, there should be an apartment for tourists or a place for smaller events.
