African swine fever diagnosed in Slovakia

Veterinary clinics have adopted measures to stop the contagion.

The very first case of African swine fever has been diagnosed in Slovakia in the village of Strážne, Trebišov district. The village is situated close to the Hungarian border, the Sme daily reported.

“The disease was confirmed by laboratory tests of biological material in the national referential laboratory,” said Daniel Hrežík of the Agriculture Ministry’s press department, as quoted by Sme.

Slovakia has already informed the EU bodies about the disease outbreak.

The veterinary clinics from the regional branch of the State Veterinary and Food Administration in Trebišov have already adopted measures that comply with the government regulation to slaughter animals in breeding. They marked out a protection zone three kilometres from the outbreak point, along with another 10-kilometre surveillance zone.
