Every Slovak knows the cartoon of the old man – Deduško Večerníček - coming out of his cottage house, lighting the stars up with his stick with the help of his white dog in the intro for the TV bedtime story.

His house has a real model in the village of Nová Sedlica, the easternmost point of Slovakia. The house is a National Cultural Monument and will undergo reconstruction.

Public broadcaster RTVS will take care of the reconstruction, buying the land from the village where Večerníček’s house will be renovated. The house was bought as well.

The roof was leaking and the village covered the straw roof with a waterproof tarpaulin. Clay plastering was falling down in many sections.

Exhibition of children programmes

The house will undergo reconstruction next year under the supervision of the Regional Monuments Board in Prešov, the TASR newswire reported.

The roof will be changed, along with the damaged wooden squared timbers, roof frame, windows and shutters, doors and wooden floors. There will be a new chimney and the interior and exterior plastering will be renewed.

RTVS plans to set up a permanent exhibition of children programmes after the reconstruction.

The house in Nová Sedlica with an area of more than 37 square metres was built in the first half of the 20th century. Since 1987, it has been a National Cultural Monument. Between the years 1994 and 1996, it underwent reconstruction but then the owner moved to the Czech Republic and the house started to deteriorate.
