As well as Fico and Kaliňák, Bugár and Danko are mentioned in Kočner’s text messages

Text messages recently published by the Denník N daily showed that several politicians besides former PM Robert Fico and former interior minister Robert Kaliňák, have communicated with Marian Kočner. The media, including The Slovak Spectator reported about the communications with Fico and Kaliňák on August 14.

Controversial businessman Marian Kočner faces the charge of ordering the murder of Ján Kuciak. Kuciak's fiancée Martina Kušnírová, who was present at the time, was also murdered. Kočner is believed to have met with Béla Bugár, the chairman of the junior coalition party, Most-Híd, in the Maldives in March 2018, shortly after the murders.

The media reported back then that Bugár and Kočner were on the same island. Bugár claimed that it was a coincidence and they just greeted each other. Kočner's description of the situation concurred with this – they had met in a restaurant and greeted each other.

Messages sent via the Threema app between Kočner and Alena Zsuzsová, who is also charged with the murder, show that it was more than just a greeting.

“I just had breakfast with Béla,” Kočner wrote to Zsuzsová, as quoted by Denník N. “I will meet with him again this afternoon… I will say what would I do if I were him… I think he will be strongly perceptive.”

Bugár has a back door

Kočner then informed Zsuzsová that Bugár would be returning home earlier than he had planned to solve the crisis in government. After the afternoon meeting, Kočner wrote to her that Bugár is indeed very perceptive. Zsuzsová wondered how Most-Híd would behave.

Most-Híd did not allow the government to fall, but Robert Fico left his position. Kočner wrote to Zsuzsová that Béla is not a d*ck, he has a back door and that it was he, Kočner, who had drummed this into him.

Bugár has since admitted that the meeting on the Maldives in March 2018 was more than just a greeting but he does not want to be linked with a person like Kočner.

“I consider him to be evil, please, do not connect me to him,” he said at the press conference held after the Kočner's text messages were made public on August 15. Bugár noted that he does not meet with him and does not know him as well as many opposition politicians. He is surprised that people believe everything written in the communications.

Preparing materials for Danko

Another politician mentioned in the communications is Speaker of Parliament Andrej Danko. Kočner ordered Zsuzsová to ask Danko whether the government would fall after the murder.

Also mentioned, in the communication, the television debate between Danko and Boris Kollár, the chairman of the opposition party Sme Rodina. Kočner texted Zsuzsová that he had sent Danko materials for the discussion. She asked him if he had written them, but Kočner explained that Peter Tóth wrote them from his notes and sources.

Danko said that he met with Kočner in 2014.

“I received promises of the moon and he offered me finance,” he said at the press conference. “But I didn’t attend parties with him or anything similar.”

He also denied using any of the materials or using his position for influence.

Jihad against Smer

Robert Fico also reacted to the published text messages. He denied that he would have ever met with Kočner in the way described in the messages.

“You can ask me a thousand times, I will take a lie detector test,” he said at the press conference held on August 15. “Whatever Marian Kočner says to defend himself is nonsense but there is one exception – if it is against Smer, then, even when it is not verified, it is true, according to you,” he said to journalists and added that the media is leading a jihad against Smer.

He also said that polls show that Smer can win a parliamentary election for the fifth time and be in the government again and he pointed out the position of the opposition.
