Von der Leyen wants Šefčovič in her inner circle

Although Maroš Šefčovič, Slovakia's European Commissioner for the past two terms, did not become the president of the European Commission (EC), he may still play an important role in the next term of the Commission.

Slovak PM Peter Pellegrini made this statement after his meeting with the future EC President, Ursula von der Leyen, on September 4, as reported by the TAST newswire.

Von der Leyen will take office in November. She wants to announce the post Šefčovič is to take in a few days, after she is done talking with all the candidates.

Simultaneously, the incoming EC President said in her talk with Pellegrini that climate change and carbon neutrality by 2050 are the EU's biggest challenges it faces.

“I am glad to see her enthusiasm and determination in returning leadership to Europe in a number of areas,” PM Pellegrini said, as quoted by TASR.
