Maroš Šefčovič, the long-time European Commissioner for Slovakia, will remain the vice-president of the European Commission in the next five years.

Šefčovič will no longer deal with the energy union portfolio, however. In the Commission of Ursula von der Leyen, he will cover the portfolio of interinstitutional relations and foresight.

Von der Leyen announced her nominations for the commissioners on Tuesday noon. The college of commissioners consists of 27 members, one representative from each member state.

The candidates for the posts as nominated by von der Leyen will now have to pass grilling in the European Parliament to be approved in their posts.

The new college will have eight vice-presidents, including the high-representative of the EU for foreign policy and security policy (Josep Borrell).

The vice-presidents are responsible for the top priorities in the political guidelines, the EC wrote in its press release. They will steer our work on the most important overarching issues, such as the European Green Deal, a Europe fit for the digital age, an economy that works for people, protecting our European way of life, a stronger Europe in the world and a new push for European democracy.

Three executive vice-presidents will have a double function. They will be both the vice-president responsible for one of three core topics of the president-elect's agenda and commissioners.

Maroš Šefčovič in the European Commission:

2009–2010 European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth

2010–2014 Vice-President of the European Commission for Interinstitutional Relations and Administration

2014–present Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union
