Passengers travelling on the Bratislava-Komárno route can now use new double-decker trains. They were introduced on September 16 during selected times in order to increase transport capacity during morning and afternoon rush hour.

“I’m glad that we managed to increase the capacity on this route,” said Transport Minister Árpád Érsek, as quoted in a press release.

The regional route between Bratislava, Dunajská Streda and Komárno, operated by private carrier RegioJet, is used by many people every day, and the capacity of some trains was not sufficient.

The double-decker trains will leave Dunajská Streda on weekdays at 6:15. The new double-decker train is expected to increase the capacity by hundreds of seats, added Ivana Kašická, head of the train and bus transport department at RegioJet.

Number of train passengers on the rise

The introduction of new double-decker trains follows the first phase of strengthening the capacity of trains carried out by RegioJet and the Transport Ministry in February 2016.

The reason is a mass increase in the number of passengers using the trains. RegioJet transported 2.3 million passengers on this route during the first half of this year, which is 50 percent more than a year before.

This is due mostly to the increasing number of people living in the area, RegioJet's decision to join the integration transport system, as well as the construction and reconstruction of roads at the entrance to Bratislava, according to the carrier.
