Smer admits that Jankovská’s nomination was a mistake

If it is proven that the communication is real, the ex-state secretary should be charged, said Justice Minister Gábor Gál.

When the police seized the mobile phones belonging to several judges and the then-state secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Monika Jankovská, as part of the investigation into the Threema scandal in late August, PM Peter Pellegrini (Smer) hesitated over her dismissal.

Shortly after President Zuzana Čaputová said that the police investigation into the state secretary's involvement made her position untenable, Jankovská decided to step down, referring to the great pressure on her family. She also insisted that she had never communicated with Kočner, the Sme daily reported.

“Based on the information that has been gradually leaking to the public, it is right that Jankovská no longer sits as state secretary,” Pellegrini said recently, as quoted by Sme.

It is now up to the police and the prosecutor’s office to decide what to do next, he added.

Some Smer members are critical

Smer chair Robert Fico has been silent about several scandals involving his party. The same applies to the scandal concerning Jankovská, who was nominated as state secretary by Smer.
