The watermill in Veľké Teriakovce near Rimavská Sobota had a horizontal wheel. But it was threatened by extinction due to its technical condition and thanks to the Ozveny civic association it has been preserved.

This mill was built in 1800. After more than 100 years, it was modernised and functioning until 1961. In the region of Gemer-Malohont, it was the longest functioning mill.

“However, it was dilapidating for 40 years until our civic association came around and thanks to support from Norway Grants, we reconstructed it comprehensively,” said volunteer Miroslava Vargová from Ozveny, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

Horizontal wheel

The new history of the mill started in 2010 when it was made publicly accessible. Since then, it has served as a local museum where the traditional livelihood of our ancestors is documented. Technology for flour milling is preserved inside the mill.

The mill is unique thanks to the mentioned horizontal mill wheel, or as called in expert literature, mills of the Greek type. Its wheel was replaced by a 36-horsepower Pohl Szombathely turbine. The main body has remained in the mill to this day.

The watermill in Veľké Teriakovce is the only one in the region of Gemer-Malohont listed among cultural monuments. In the Malohont region, it is the oldest preserved mill and the biggest one from all the water mills that have been preserved in this area to this day.
