The hospitals in Banská Bystrica and Košice’s Šaca borough were named the best hospitals in 2019. This stems from a ranking presented by the INEKO think tank on October 14.

As for the state university and faculty facilities, the top spot went to the Faculty Hospital and Policlinic of F. D. Roosevelt in Banská Bystrica once again. The Central Military Hospital SNP in Ružomberok took second, followed by the University Hospital in Martin, the SITA newswire reported.

As for the general hospitals, the highest ranking was received by the private hospital in Košice’s Šaca borough, which replaced the winner from the four previous years, the hospital in Stará Ľubovňa, which came second. The state hospital in Poprad finished third.

“The increase in transparency by publishing relevant information about the quality and effectiveness of health care provided is one of the key prerequisites for the public becoming better informed and able to decide. It also puts more efficient pressure on the improvement of public services, which motivates the health facilities to continue improving,” said INEKO analyst Dušan Zachar, as quoted by SITA.

The aim is to ensure patients receive the best health care for the best price, which is also in compliance with the Value for Money principle, he added.

INEKO also announced the launch of a new Kdesaliecit.sk website, with relevant information for patients.

What are the strong and weak points?

The Roosevelt hospital in Banská Bystrica is the only big state-run facility to receive an above-average ranking in all six main parameters. Its strengths include transparency, in which it has been dominant for several years.

The Central Military Hospital in Ružomberok received a very high ranking in the satisfaction of patients category and reported a low number of patients in need of re-operation. The death rate after surgeries or following an acute stroke was also low.

The University Hospital in Martin treats serious diagnoses of patients, and patients are satisfied with its work. The hospital also improved the most in transparency compared to last year, SITA wrote.

The worst in this category was the Faculty Hospital in Trnava, which reported an average or below average ranking. Its patients are the second to least satisfied (after the University Hospital Bratislava), and often submit complaints with the supervisory authority.

As for the general hospitals, the facility in Košice-Šaca has reported an above-average score in all six main parameters, as the only one in the category.

The main domain of the hospital in Stará Ľubovňa is the high satisfaction of patients, very good quality of provided health care, great management and transparency. The hospital in Poprad benefited from the work of its surgery wards. It is also proof that state-run facilities can have a balanced budget and pay for their commitments on time, SITA wrote.

The worst scores were given to the hospital in Levice.
