UPDATED: Czech police to reintroduce Slovakia border checks

Border checks will last for 10 days, but can be extended.

The Czech police will reintroduce checks at former crossings at the border with Slovakia on September 29, which is Thursday.

The checks will last 10 days, and they may be extended after this period. They will be carried out at 17 road crossings, seven railway and three river crossings.

Exceptions will apply to farmers in the immediate vicinity of the border and also to foresters, hunters and fishermen working in the area.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala cited increased illegal migration as the reason.

Since the beginning of 2022 the Czech police have detained a total of 11,983 illegal migrants in the Czech Republic, a number significantly higher than in 2015 when the migration crisis was at its peak in Europe. The Czech Republic is mainly a transit country, not the destination for migrants, the vast majority of whom are Syrians.
