The Slovak National Party (SNS) has a new leader after 153 of 156 delegates present at the meeting of the party in Žilina elected Andrej Danko to the post. Danko will succeed Ján Slota who announced his departure after the March general elections in which the party received only 4.55 percent of the vote, and thus did not make it into the parliament, the SITA newswire reported on October 6.
“I do not leave the politics,” said Slota, as quoted by SITA. “I will be helpful to chairman Danko and will be very active in the party. So nothing will really change. Only the young have probably more energy than the older ones, without discussion. Therefore there was also this exchange, from the practical reasons.”
Slota will become an honorary chairman of the party, without the right of veto.
Danko promised that the SNS will try to find new ways to attract voters, particularly among those who disagree with the rule of a one-party government and the measures it passes.
The delegates also elected new deputy chairs to SNS: Rafael Rafaj, Roman Stopka and Milan Frič, SITA wrote.
