The new billboard campaign of the governing Smer party insults supporters of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), said SDKÚ election leader Iveta Radičová at a press conference in Bratislava on May 28, the TASR newswire reported.

This was said in response to Smer billboards that appeared last week with slogans such as: “They robbed the disabled, they'll do it again,” or “They stopped the (construction of) motorways, they'll do it again,” or “They sold off Slovakia, they'll do it again”. Each billboard includes the appeal “Stop the SDKÚ-KDH-SMK coalition!”.

According to Radičová, this is a dangerous game that doesn't offer any solutions for Slovakia. “I must be dreaming. I hoped we’d never sink so low as to copy the campaign in the Czech Republic,” she said as quoted by TASR, claiming that Smer's billboards made her think of the Czech campaign as soon as she first saw them. Radičová also said that SDKÚ will not choose the same path and won’t insult the voters of other parties.

“Smer campaign isn’t aggressive, but true, and the truth is hard sometimes,” said Smer spokesperson Katarína Kližanová Rýsová in response to Radičová's criticism. “On the other hand, it's hypocritical when a party that has set up a webpage called www.ukradli.sk (they stole) and claims that Smer stole Bratislava Castle is accusing another party of aggression,” Kližanová Rýsová told TASR.
