Visitors will find themselves at a village farmyard, full of livestock and with original Slovak kolibas, i.e. shepherd’s huts from the first half of the 19th century. Original wooden cabins moved and restored by old craftsmen and carpenters in a traditional way are not a museum, but rather fully functional farm buildings. One is home to a bakery with an original oven in which traditional bread is baked daily on wood, which visitors can buy still hot, together with homemade cakes and pastries in grandmothers’ style. In another cabin, sheep cheese is made; and in the third, the Koliba restaurant is situated. Traditional cuisine, homemade pies, dumplings and žinčica, the unfermented sheep whey, somehow taste better in this environment.
Although the car park may be full, visitors are scattered all around the vast complex. It is a great spectacle and a paradise for children. Bio-farm lies on the land of a former Botanical garden, and lovely, colossal trees impress with their beauty, especially in some seasons. People can grill and have a barbecue at built fireplaces with sheds – most popular are those close to sheep pens or to playgrounds for children.
Many call the complex, salaš – a sheep farm; this evokes the presence of sheep, livestock, horses and a shepherd. We have called the complex Biofarma Príroda, and deservedly so. It is no coincidence that in the past century, Slovak dendrologist A. Čejka chose this plot for the site of a new Botanical garden. We managed to save this gem of a place and combine its farming use with preserving the original, natural beauty. Our most recent project is to create a Botanical Nature Trail.
Biofarma is open year round, daily, on workdays as well as weekends. Our animals do not recognise a holiday or Sunday. Each season is wonderful at Biofarma. Many regular visitors and families with children already know that Biofarma is maybe more beautiful in winter than in summer: at Christmas or around New Years, lambs are born, being scattered around the complex like snowflakes. In autumn, this “arboretum” displays all colours and in spring, blooming trees are incredibly picturesque.
This year, the results of our work have also convinced the capital Bratislava. Our company succeeded in the competition for revitalisation of the leisure time complex lying directly in Bratislava. Around this time, we are preparing and we have started revitalising and renovating the Železná Studnička complex. We will try to do the same – to find a balance between nature and relaxation for the public in a similar vein. With this goal in mind, we will build the original swan pavilion at Železná Studnička with a dance floor, a restaurant, grills and relaxation sites; we will bring animals and try to revive another “sleeping beauty” – the charming nature complex of Železná Studnička – Rotunda.
