A huge fire destroyed the first reuse centre in Bratislava, KOLO, near the Avion and Ikea shopping malls on the outskirts of the capital, after just seven months of operation in mid May. The centre has risen from the ashes and reopened on November 11.
“In this special way, we have been given the opportunity to make our reuse centre even better,” said Martina Čechová, circular economy project manager at OLO, the municipal waste-management organisation Odvoz a Likvidácia Odpadu (OLO), which operates the centre.
Its basic function has been retained: items that people have at home but no longer use being used elsewhere. The opening hours and the categories of items they accept are still the same. As part of a cosmetic change to the layout and design of the reuse centre, they have enlarged the space for paintings as well as the library. They moved the valuable items department behind the cash desk and created a new chill-out zone. It is furnished with seating bags from WAKIVAKY made from recycled OLO banners.

The library also has a new category called “Kajnšmetke a Bizár”. It was the word connoisseur, fajnšmeker in Slovak, coined by a contestant on one TV competition, which OLO staff began using for bizarre and unclassifiable books.
