FESTIVAL: THE KONVERGENCIE / Convergences music festival opens its 12th year in Bratislava with three concerts on May 19, starting at 18:00 in the Aréna Theatre: Ida Kelarová and Škampa Quartet (both from the Czech Republic) will play the Rómska balada (Roma Ballad); Bratislava Rabbi Baruch Myers will perform the Chassidic Songs programme with cellist Jozef Lupták, accordionist Boris Lenko and violinist Miloš Valent; and the AfterPhurikane project to revive old Roma songs will conclude the concert, bringing together Roma amateurs and non-Roma professional musicians. Afterwards, Konvergencie will travel across Slovakia with programmes combining classical chamber music, tango and jazz, visiting Ružomberok, Liptovský Hrádok, Levoča and finally Košice. LIVE MUSIC: A double concert by EA BAND and MAOK brings ambient chill-out music. EA consists of Róbert Borodajkevyč and Sisa Latková and plays electronic jazz and chill-out; MAOK, aka Martin Tesák, plays music “full of emotion”. The performance also includes Marek Škop’s award-winning documentary Iné svety.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: Roma Rhapsody – As part of a scientific musicological conference, this concert brings Hungarian and Gypsy music by Franz Liszt, performed by pianist Paul Gulda and renowned Roma band Cigánski Diabli.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: Cellomania v galérii – The cycle Hudba a obrazy / Music and Paintings brings concerts organised by the Slovak Philharmonic to the Slovak National Gallery. This time the chamber ensemble Cellomania, comprising four Slovak cellists, performs works by P. Šimai, L. Kupkovič, W. Fitzenhagen, M. Novák, M. Markowicz, V. Godár and Ľ. Čekovská.

EXHIBITION:THE VOJTECH Löffler Museum in Košice is marking the Ice Hockey World Championship with an exhibition of local artists’ works (including installations, drawings, paintings, videos, photos, plastic art, and more) focused on the motif of hockey. More than 20 authors have provided works. EUROPEAN VOLUNTEERING TOUR: Deň Európy / Europe Day – The day to celebrate the continent fell on May 9, but five Slovak towns and cities will now receive a travelling exhibition called Europe Day 2011 – European Volunteers’ Tour. It comprises lectures, discussions, and many accompanying events.

MUSEUM/EXHIBITION: Levočská biela pani / The White Lady of Levoča – Juliana Korponay-Géci, responsible for the capitulation of the town of Levoča during the Francis II Rákóczi uprising, but later accused of treason and executed, is popularly believed to have returned to haunt the town. This exhibition comprises artefacts and documents and seeks to explain her role in history.
