Though it is not difficult to find in Bratislava a professional translator or interpreter to translate into English or, Slovak, finding a reliable one is not so easy.
Most interpreters and translators have contracts with an agency and sometimes more than just one. A number of translators have agreements with some Slovak ministries as well. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a list of the translators that can be contacted by going through the Ministry at 3704 210 or 3704 333. But even this list isn't always a viable option since their public relations department said that these translators are hard to get a hold of so they use translators and interpreters from various agencies as well. When working with interpreters give them an idea beforehand what's going to be the topic. Most interpreters prefer that you give them some materials beforehand, so they can prepare.
BIS has 46 certified translators. It costs 240 Sk for a one page translation from English into Slovak, and 300 Sk for a one page translation from Slovak to English. You may have to pay more if the translated subject is in a specific field, or if you need it in a short period of time. Interpreting costs a good days wage at 5,500 Sk for eight hours.
Lexika can arrange a one page translation that will draw 320 Sk, or more, depending on how much time is allocated. Other options include PROMO International which has 100 translators in their data base, Simulta, which offers the most professional interpretng service, and PRO Sympatia which can arrange a translator in other cities besides Bratislava. The rates for PROMO International, Simulta, and PRO Sympatia vary depending on what agreement is arranged with the client.
When you need a certified translator for documents that need officially approved translations such as marriage certificate or work permit information, contact the Krajský súd in Bratislava, on Záhradnícka 10, on the first floor, door 141. Their phone number is 526-4176 or 241-060. They will provide you (for 50 Sk) with a list of three certified translators in every Slovak city.
