With Shrove Tuesday occurring at the beginning of March this year, it is probably not too early to start thinking about pancakes. In fact according to 66 percent of the people in my household, it is actually never a bad time to think about pancakes. And if you have gone to the trouble of thinking about them, why not eat some? If you share these priorities then there is a popular venue among Bratislava residents that you probably ought to try.
Although it is only short walk from Bratislava’s Hlavná Stanica rail station, you need to look carefully to find Lacinka, which occupies a small space on Šancova Street. Inside there is a simply decorated room, which only has space for about 12 people. They do not take reservations, so you might find yourself waiting if you want to eat in. Turnover, however, is rapid, and the worn-down track in the floor tiles suggest that the volume of people which I saw coming and going on a weekday lunch time is not unusual.
There is just one menu, attached to the wall next to the till, and they really only do pancakes. However, you do have a choice of about 50 fillings, divided into sweet and savoury categories.
