A popular spot for tourists in Bratislava, the sculpture of Čumil crawling out from a manhole at the corner of Panská Street and Rybárska Brána has been dismantled.
As the local police discovered, someone had interfered with the sculpture.
“To prevent damage, the sculpture has been temporarily dismantled, and its anchoring will undergo regular maintenance,” said Nora Gubková, spokesperson of Bratislava’s Old Town borough, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The photos of the empty space where Čumil should be started to appear on social networks on the morning of November 25. It is not the first case where someone has interfered with a sculpture, TASR reported.
Not the first damaged statue
The sculpture of a Napoleonic soldier was levered out during the night of September 7 and 8 in the nearby Main Square. The sculpture, leaning against the bench in front of the French Embassy, is also a popular tourist attraction.
The police informed the owner of the sculpture, the Old Town city borough, which subsequently took the statue away for repair.
“Nobody needs to be concerned, the statue is safe and we believe that it will soon return to its proper place,” Bratislava city council informed on its Facebook site.
