In honor of International Women’s Day (which, by the way, has its roots in New York City over a century ago, when women first rallied for equal rights), we take a moment to celebrate the incredible women in our lives—our mothers, wives, daughters, girlfriends, and all the inspiring women who shape our world every day. And let’s pay tribute to ourselves as well; self love is very important!

Looking into the history behind this day, we see that its origins can be traced back as far as 1857. The working conditions in the sweatshop factories of the day were merely the stepping stone from which women decried their situation in the late 19th century. From better pay to voting rights, demands for equality became louder and clearer until an international coalition of working women proclaimed the first IWD (International Women’s Day) in 1911. The horrors of WWI saw the day become a platform for women to not only advocate for themselves, but also against the wholesale slaughter of so many husbands, fathers and brothers. By 1917, in Russia, protests stemming from IWD were, in fact, instrumental in the downfall of the czarist government. While it would not be until 1975 that the UN would recognize the significance of the day, none could argue that International Women’s Day has played a transformative role throughout the 20th century.

At the IWCB - International Women’s Club of Bratislava, this celebration goes beyond. We channel the spirit of this day into tangible support for those who need it most. Through our charitable initiatives, we stand by women and children in shelters and crisis centers, offering not just aid, but a message of solidarity: You are not alone. You are valued. You are seen.

Our members dedicate their time, resources, and hearts to fundraising efforts that provide essentials, educational support, and moments of joy to those facing difficult circumstances. Whether through donation drives, community events, or simply lending a compassionate ear, even a small act of kindness goes a long way.

International Women’s Day is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a call to action. And while we celebrate the progress made, we remain committed to lifting others, ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to thrive.

Here’s to the strength, resilience, and boundless potential of women—today and every day!
