The culture minister’s attempt at a folk costume was a disaster

With the Disneylandification of folklore, "kroje" are becoming propaganda.

The nationalist, homophobic, Austria-based culture minister of Slovakia, Martina Šimkovičová (Slovak National Party), sat down last week in the TASR news agency studio and chatted with host Daniel Forgács in mutual understanding, only occasionally insulting minorities. All the while, the great potential for another of her failures hung in the air.

Šimkovičová wore a short blue vest (lajblík) for the interview, and they spent the first few minutes discussing whether traditional costumes (kroje) should become part of everyday attire.

TASRTV:

The minister also announced that she would wear a full traditional costume to the famous Východná folklore festival, which took place the weekend following the interview. Indeed she wore the costume, but it turned out as things usually do when Šimkovičová is involved: superficial, incomplete, and empty.
