Lawmaker Peter Kotlár, a studied doctor and antivaxxer who entered parliament on the nationalist Slovak National Party’s slate last year, has said that the coronavirus pandemic in Slovakia did not happen.
More than 21,000 people died of the coronavirus during the pandemic, and people are still dying of the virus today. In 2023, 526 people were killed by the coronavirus.
“In the conclusion of my investigation, which I will present in September, there is clear evidence that the pandemic in Slovakia did not meet the criteria of what a pandemic means in terms of incidence and other measurable parameters,” he told the Health Parliamentary Committee on June 19.
The government appointed Kotlár in January, who regularly appears on his online disinformation-spreading television channel, its “plenipotentiary for reviewing the process of managing and handling resources during the coronavirus pandemic”. The proposal had been put forward by Prime Minister and Smer party leader Robert Fico. During the pandemic, he questioned, and even ignored, coronavirus measures and called the pandemic a “game among pharmaceutical firms”.
It is not clear who is helping Kotlár investigate the handling of the pandemic. The MP said that he would publish the list of the investigation commission in September.
