Delegates at the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) regional congress in Prešov on May 19 gave their unanimous support for the re-election of incumbent HZDS chairman Vladimír Mečiar.
All 98 delegates voted in support of Mečiar. At the beginning of the session, the delegates decided to vote publicly on all personnel matters.
Following the congress, HZDS vice-chair Milan Urbáni said that most party members are not pleased with his fellow vice-chair, Viliam Veteška's, decision to run against Mečiar.
The HZDS regional congress in Trenčín, also held on May 19, also supported Mečiar. Six district congresses in Trenčín region had already expressed their support for Mečiar, while three others – the Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Púchov, and Považská Bystrica districts - had backed Veteška. Both Mečiar and Veteška attended the Trenčín congress.
Meciar has the support of seven out of the eight of the party’s regional branches, with only the Trnava Region backing Veteška.
Party elections will be held at the party’s national congress in June.
