Already angry that she'd refused to cook dinner for their five children, Dezider became enraged, wielding a knife he was using to cut salami for lunch and stabbing Zlata in the neck.

He later told police he regretted the murder.

"She was provoking me. She got me so worked up I don't even know how my arm sprang up with the knife," he said. "When I saw the knife in her neck I was stunned. I took it out and started shaking."

Zlata, whose age was not reported by Slovak media, had been living with Dezider, 37, since she was 13.
