The current opposition Smer party would require only nine other MPs to have a constitutional majority in the next parliament, according to a poll conducted by the Focus polling agency at the request of Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), Slovakia’s public broadcaster. The party would receive 42 percent of votes, representing 81 seats out of 150 in parliament, the SITA newswire reported.
The other parliamentary parties would each get less than 10 percent of all votes, according to the poll conducted between January 9 and January 16 and involving 1,076 respondents.
The Smer party would be followed by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 9.3 percent of votes (18 seats) and the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) with 8.3 percent of votes (16 seats). Most-Híd and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) would both win the support of just over 6 percent of voters and get 13 and 12 seats in parliament respectively.
The new Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽNO) party would also make it into parliament with 5.2 percent of votes, equal to 10 MPs.
However, the poll found that the Slovak National Party (SNS) would not obtain enough votes to pass the 5-percent threshold, nor would the new 99 Percent – Civic Voice party.
Meanwhile, the MVK polling agency released the results of a poll carried out at the beginning of January which showed that up to 29.3 percent of Smer supporters would like to see it rule in coalition with the KDH. A coalition was also favoured by KDH voters, with 43.9-percent support, the TASR newswire reported.
On the other hand, a broad coalition of centre-right parties would especially please SDKÚ (45.9 percent) and Most-Híd (52.5 percent) voters. SaS and OĽNO voters mainly sought alternative combinations, though their exact composition was not spelled out.
