Results of a poll conducted by the Public Opinion Research Department (UVVM) at the Slovak Statistics Office suggested that 57% of Slovaks support the reinstatement of capital punishment. The poll was carried out in early June on 1,064 respondents.
The results show that capital punishment is losing support among Slovaks. A similar poll conducted a year ago registered 5% more support.
When capital punishment was outlawed by a decree issued in 1991, two years after the fall of Communism, by Czechoslovak president Václav Havel, support for its reinstatement was at 84%.
