Economy Minister Robert Nemcsics said Slovakia remains "in a very small field" in the hunt for a Sk30 billion ($720 million) investment from the French Peugeot car manufacturer.
Another government source said the only two sites remaining in talks were Slovakia's Trnava and Poland's Katowice, the Czech Republic having been dropped because it is already saturated with foreign car makers.
The factory is to turn out 300,000 cars annually and employ 3,000 people. Peugeot is to decide early next year where it will build.
