The UNESCO committee for protection of intangible cultural heritage approved the traditional music from the Slovak municipality of Terchová for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 5.
The approval took place at a session in Baku, Azerbaijan, and seven Terchová musicians represented Slovakia at the session, the Culture Ministry informed the TASR newswire. They presented the uniqueness and beauty of Terchová’s music to the more than 800 delegates of 100 countries. Another item of intangible culture nominated by Slovakia for the list for the upcoming period is the traditional Radvaň market.
The prestigious list contains a total of 257 elements, such as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna or traditional Iranian medicine, for example. Since 2005, Slovakia has had the fujara, a traditional folklore musical instrument, inscribed on the list.
The inscription means international acknowledgement by UNESCO to exceptional forms of folk and traditional expressions, like music, dance, national rituals and mythology, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the world, skills connected with traditional production, as well as special cultural environments. These elements are also subject to international support and protection.
