U.S. Steel Košice (USSK) will resume its standard five-day workweek after cutting work hours for only a month, USSK spokesman Ján Bača told the SITA newswire.
"I can confirm that U.S. Steel Košice management and trade unions agreed to put an end to the four-day workweek and resume the standard regime at the beginning of February. This decision was made so that we deliver the ordered goods to our customers in the set time. We do not want to comment on the economy in a broader sense but we will closely watch its development and adjust our plans to it," Bača stated, as quoted by TASR.
The steel company was initially supposed to operate in a shortened working regime for two months. The head of the trade union council at USSK, Mikuláš Hintoš, reported that the trade unions and the company's management decided to return to the standard workweek on January 24, stating that the economic situation has improved and the company is preparing to resume production at its No. 3 blast furnace.
The Sme daily wrote in its January 25 issue that the steelworks cut the workweek due to poor market conditions and the resumption of the regular workweek reflects better developments such as an increase in orders from car producers that have increased production, especially Volkswagen SK.
