The Ukrainian Ambassador to Slovakia, Inna Ohnivets, told journalists in Bratislava on Thursday, August 20, that the amount of radiation produced by the X-ray scanning device at the railway border crossing Uzhgorod-Matovce is harmful, the TASR newswire wrote.
The ambassador said the state of health of four Ukrainian workers has deteriorated and that several measurements have been made at the border crossing by both Slovak and Ukrainian authorities which prove the damaging effect of the scanner's radiation.
The ambassador added that their expert assessment, produced by the main doctor of hygienic services in Lviv, recommends stopping the use of this scanning device. The ambassador also responded to the assertion that it has not reacted to Slovakia's proposal to replace Ukrainian train drivers with Slovak ones during the scanning process.
“The truth is that this was discussed in early August, with no results,” Ambassador Ohnivets told TASR. Concurrently, she asked whether the Slovak side would agree with “its citizens being exposed to radiation”.
The Ukrainian Railways unilaterally stopped cargo transport at the Uzhgorod-Matovce border crossing on August 18 but it was resumed on August 19 at 18:25 after the Slovak government decided to switch off the scanning device. TASR
