NGOs launch campaign to change financing of politics in Slovakia

Representatives of NGOs are calling on parliamentary political parties to fulfil their public pledge and adopt an effective law to increase supervision and transparency of the financing of political parties in Slovakia. On Tuesday, September 18, they launched a public campaign to remind politicians of their so far unfulfilled pledge. The appeal and campaign are announced by the Transparency International Slovensko(TIS), Inštitút pre ekonomické a sociálne reformy (Institute for Economic and Social Reforms-INEKO), and Inštitút pre dobre spravovanú spoločnosť (Slovak Governance Institute-SGI).

"Before the election, when the fact of how little transparent the agenda is and reports on financing political parties was debated; and, of course, in connection with how strongly the Gorilla scandal resonated, politicians were inclined to make changes and they supported calls to make the financing system of political parties more transparent,” Gabriel Šipoš TIS told the TASR newswire, adding that by that time, TIS elaborated a seven point plan to simplify the financing of parties and their candidates, and make the control and supervision more strict – as well as implementing sanctions in the event that those obligations are not met.

NGOs claim that all six current parliamentary parties made a public pledge to work on anti-corruption measures in the financing of political parties, but thus far they have not taken any specific steps. Thus, the NGOs opted for a campaign aimed at changing the financing of politics in Slovakia, TASR wrote.
