‘Slovaks misunderstood Boor case’

That is why in the UK you can hardly become a judge before your 50th birthday, said Lord Justice Matthew Thorpe, a now retired noted English judge specialising in family law. Vareha's case returns to start
THE “LORD of Zemplín” still has a chance to avoid a lengthy prison sentence. Mikuláš Vareha, the entrepreneur who owes his nickname to his extravagant business and private activities, including a trade in bark beetles, was sentenced to 11 years in prison earlier this year for tax evasion, but now the Supreme Court has overturned the verdict.
Velvet anniversary commemorated
A VARIETY of events celebrated the 24th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution on November 17 as leaders in both Slovakia and the neighbouring Czech Republic sought to emphasise the need for passing the affiliated history on to future generations.

Hard sledding for debtors
Late payments, an increased number of bankruptcies and legal proceedings started to claim receivables due from debtors have forced entrepreneurs to change their habits and be more careful. Legislative changes adopted recently continue to follow this trend and aim at making the position of debtors more difficult.

EU budget good news, PM says
SLOVAKIA will pay €6.78 billion into the EU budget in 2014-2020 while it will be able to draw €20.29 billion from the EU coffers. Slovakia will thus get €14 billion from the EU in that programming period, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on November 20, as reported by the TASR newswire, in reaction to the European Parliament’s passing the budget for the EU.
EC: Slovakia's projected deficit a concern for 2014
THE EUROPEAN Commission has expressed concern with the Slovak Finance Ministry’s budget for 2014, essentially disagreeing with a ministry forecast that it will keep the deficit below the 3 percent cap for eurozone members and thus far preventing the country from tapping the so-called investment exemption to improve infrastructure and prime the economy.
UPDATED: Five remaining regional leaders elected; extremist wins in Banská Bystrica
VOTERS in five remaining self-governing regions, known by Slovaks under the acronym VÚCs, have elected their leaders in the second round of regional elections held on November 23. Banská Bystrica grabbed most of the attention when a right-wing extremist, Marian Kotleba, who has a history of racist statements and acts, won the second-round run-off, according to the official results confirmed by the Central Election Commission on November 24.

VOTERS in Banská Bystrica Region have elected Marian Kotleba, who has a history of racist statements and acts, to lead the self-governing region, known by Slovaks under the acronym VÚC. Kotleba of the People’s Party – Our Slovakia (ĽSNS), picked up 55.53 percent in the second round run-off and thus defeated Vladimír Maňka, backed by Smer, Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Most-Híd, Party of Hungarian Community (SMK), Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), Movement for Democracy and the Green Party, who collected 44.46 percent, according to official results published by the Slovak Statistics Office.
